Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy, nicknamed the Comrade Count, was a Russian and Soviet writer who wrote in many genres but specialized in science fiction and historical novels. During World War II his role in the Extraordinary State Commission was recognised by the Nuremberg Trials of the Nazi war criminals and their attempted genocide of Europe's Jews by means of gas vans.
